York City
Few British cities offer the magical charm and beauty of York.
Outstanding architecture and 2,000 years of history combine with
bustling shopping streets and award-winning attractions. With over 30
museums, galleries and tours to choose from in its compact centre, York
offers something for everyone all year round.
Visitors can enjoy first class shopping in major high street stores,
traditional gift shops and independent boutiques, while the fashion
conscious head for the new designer outlet village on the city’s
outskirts. Evening entertainment is equally varied and might involve a
moonlit boat cruise, a concert or theatre visit, or ghost tour around
one of the most haunted cities in Europe.
A wide range of restaurants serves both traditional English and fine
international cuisine, and the city reputedly has a pub or wine bar for
every night of the year! An exciting calendar of events and festivals
runs throughout the year and includes the ever popular Jorvik Viking
Festival and St Nicholas Christmas Festival, together with the nation's
largest annual Festival of Food and Drink. A wealth of accommodation
suiting all tastes and budgets complement Yorkshire's famous
hospitality, making York the ideal destination for your short
break.
Base for exploring Yorkshire/moors
The North York Moors is a very special place. A great variety of
landscapes within a small area is what makes it unique and gives it a
character that so many people can enjoy. Here you can experience the
vast open space of moorland, listen to the call of the upland birds,
walk for miles and miles or sit and watch the world go by. You can
wander through woods, saunter through picturesque villages of honey
sandstone, throw pebbles in a stream or build sandcastles on the beach.
All around are the signs of past generations, historic abbeys, embattled
castles, churches, crosses and ancient routes. The local culture and
traditions here are strong. You can listen, you can watch and you are
welcome to join in. The North York Moors’ Jurassic geology is perhaps
second to none. Here the father of English geology made his discoveries
and at the coast you can see dinosaur footprints and search for fossils
as he may have done.
But the reason why the North York Moors are so very special is probably
summed up best by Aelred, Abbot of Rievaulx Abbey
(1142-1167): "Everywhere peace, everywhere serenity, and a marvelous
freedom from the tumult of the world."
Coastal resorts
Nothing beats the timeless appeal of the seaside. Golden beaches,
majestic cliffs and Great British resorts. Scarborough, Bridlington and
Cleethorpes bustle with life; Whitby is a historic port and Filey and
Hornsea are traditional favorites and proud to stay that way. The coast
is around 30 minutes drive from Slingsby Hall
Castle Howard
Castle Howard is one of Britain's finest stately homes, located in
the beautiful Howardian Hills, just a few miles from Slingsby Hall.
Built in 1699, Castle Howard is, today, still the private home of the
Howard family. As a major tourist attraction the house receives hundreds
of thousands of visitors annually from all over the world, who come to
enjoy a variety of delights.
